ABOUT

Project Venture, in collaboration with Bank of America, is hosting a business and investment hackathon on Friday, February 21st at Dougherty Valley High School! Any student from 9th to 12th grade (as of 2/12/2020 9:00 PM PST, middle school registration has closed due to overwhelming demand) is eligible to come and compete at our event in teams of up to 3 by registering with the registration link. Prospective competitors are not required to have a team beforehand; solo attendees can still form teams at the event.

 

At the start of the event, the competition prompt will be revealed and competitors will be allowed to start working. The prompt will be related to a hypothetical investor who is in a certain financial situation and has assigned you the task of curating an investment portfolio based on certain goals and requirements (e.g. saving for tuitions or retirement; high liquidity levels, risk tolerance, etc.). You will create an investment proposal, in a report, based on their needs, and then pitch your strategy to a panel of judges from Bank of America, who will score your report and presentation on a variety of criteria. Essentially, competitors will be trying to "convince" the hypothetical investor that their proposed investment strategy is the best at meeting the investor's goals. 

 

There will be guest speakers from Bank of America that will be giving keynote speeches and panel interviews throughout the event. Investment bankers and high-ranking executives like Senior Vice Presidents, across many finance careers, will be giving their personal insights and sharing their experiences, as well as hosting a Q&A session for any questions competitors may have.

 

For most of the hackathon, competitors will be researching investments to formulate their strategy, as well as creating their reports and presentations. Thus, competitors must bring their own devices (laptops, smartphones, etc.) to compete successfully. Dinner and snacks are included in the $10 entry fee, which can be paid in cash at-the-door or on the DVHS webstore before 2/21.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DO I NEED TO HAVE A TEAM TO ATTEND?

Nope! We encourage people to bring their friends, but we will help you find a team if you come without a team.

DO I NEED PRIOR INVESTING EXPERIENCE?

No. We will be sending educational resources via email in the week leading up to the hackathon so that everyone will have an understanding of investing fundamentals. We encourage students of all experience levels to compete and get a taste for the industry. 

WHAT SHOULD I BRING TO THE EVENT?

Bring your own devices (laptops, smartphones, etc.). If you paid on the DVHS webstore, either submit a screenshot of your receipt to this form, or bring a receipt of your payment. Otherwise, bring $10 in cash to pay for admission at the door. Food and drinks will be provided. We will do our best to accommodate all dietary restrictions listed on our registration, but we cannot guarantee them. 

DO I HAVE TO STAY FOR THE WHOLE DURATION?

We strongly recommend that all attendees stay for the full duration of the event. Leaving early may forfeit any prizes you win, while arriving late may give you a competitive disadvantage. If you cannot stay for the entire time, please let us know by emailing dvhs.project.venture@gmail.com or telling one of the organizers at the event.
